Susanne Hojgaard

My name is Susanne Hojgaard; I was born in Denmark, Europe in 1957 as one of the baby boomers I believe we are being called. Got married in 1973 had 4 children in close succession. My husband and I owned and operated a bakery for ten years, sold it and came to America in 1993.

We are now both working at a restaurant, he as the baker, me as a short order cook. As much as I love cooking it is not what I want to do with the rest of my life. What I would like to do is help other women in any way I can and hopefully get help back if needed. In short make a website where we can share, compare and talk about anything. Hence the name: The woman-to-woman talk.

The reason for my website is that the more I have been around other women the more I have seen the need for a place where we can go and talk. Our busy lives often prevent us from getting together with other people and to make new friends. Many of us really do need to make new friends, a friend who doesn’t judge you for the way you look and is your friend because you connect and have similar beliefs.

I hope this will become a place where we all can find what we are looking for in a friend.

The woman-to-woman talk will hopefully also become a place where we can share new and good things with one another.

My journey

Back in 1989 we took a vacation here, my husband and I. We rented a mobile home and traveled from New York up around Syracuse from there we went south as I wanted to go to Memphis, Tennessee to visit Graceland. We spent 14 wonderful days traveling the eastern states and fell more and more in love with the country.

In Illinois we met this very friendly couple, which owned and operated a small bakery outside of Champaign, Illinois. We talked that whole afternoon and they offered to sponsor us if we ever decided to immigrate to USA.

Back home again, we told our children about America and the fun part was when our, at that time very young daughter said; can’t we go there next weekend?

Of course we laughed. But the idea was born!

After many considerations we decided to bring our children here on a vacation and ended up spending 6 Months here. Our children loved it too, probably mostly because they had our full attention and also because they made a lot of new friends. When the 6 Months where up, we went back home but the idea of immigrating was in-grated in all of us. We spent another 4 years at home and during all that time we where planning the move to America.

The short of the story is that we have been here since 1993 and we love it. Our children is the only draw back in it all; as our two sons now live back in Denmark and we miss them daily! our oldest son is the proud father of three baby girls and our youngest son is a bonus dad to 6 children, our daughter lives in the same town as we do and has blessed us with her first child.

The friends we made on our first trip here came through for us, they sponsored us and unfortunately we lost the day to day contact with them as we moved to another town 60 miles from where they live. The husband of the couple died a few years back, but I guess that is the way life goes at times. We are still friends with their family, we just don’t see them as often as I would like.

We have now lived in Paris, Illinois for the past 15 years and we like it here. Not saying that if the right opportunity arrives we wouldn’t move somewhere else ;-)
